A hernia occurs when an internal organ or tissue pushes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue.
Most hernias require surgical intervention to prevent complications like incarceration or strangulation. Dr. Green provides both laparoscopic (keyhole) repair and traditional open mesh surgery, choosing the method that guarantees the lowest recurrence and fastest recovery for you.
Gallstones are hardened deposits of digestive fluid that form in the gallbladder. They can block the bile ducts, causing sudden pain and inflammation.
For symptomatic gallstones, the standard and most effective treatment is a Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal). This keyhole surgery is performed as a daycare or short-stay procedure, enabling patients to return home shortly after surgery with minimal downtime.
Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, a small finger-shaped pouch projecting from your colon. It is a medical emergency that requires prompt surgical removal.
An emergency Laparoscopic Appendectomy is the gold standard. Removing the inflamed appendix quickly prevents the risk of rupture, which could cause a life-threatening abdominal infection (peritonitis).
Conditions affecting the intestinal tract, including diverticulitis, colon polyps, intestinal obstructions, and benign tumors.
Treatment ranges from medical management to laparoscopic bowel resections. Dr. Green collaborates closely with gastroenterologists to provide complete clinical care, prioritizing bowel-sparing and minimally invasive surgical strategies.
Lumps and swellings under the skin, such as lipomas (fatty tissue growths), sebaceous cysts, or localized skin infections (abscesses).
Many soft tissue lesions can be excised in an outpatient clinic under local anesthesia. Dr. Green ensures meticulous surgical technique to yield minimal scarring and complete removal of cysts or masses to prevent recurrence.
Important instructions to guide you through your surgical journey and answer common queries
Preparing correctly for your surgery ensures your safety and improves your surgical outcome. Please follow these guidelines closely unless instructed otherwise by Dr. Green.
Do not eat or drink anything (including water, chewing gum, or mints) after midnight before your scheduled surgery, or as specified for your afternoon procedure.
Inform Dr. Green of all medications you take. You may need to stop blood thinners (aspirin, warfarin) or diabetic medications several days before surgery.
Shower with antibacterial soap the night before and morning of surgery. Wear loose, comfortable clothing, and leave jewelry and valuables at home.
You MUST arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours if you are receiving general anesthesia or sedation.
Your recovery starts immediately after surgery. Following these care guidelines helps minimize complications and promotes healing.
Keep your surgical dressings clean and dry. Avoid bathing or submerging the incision in water (no swimming or baths) until cleared by Dr. Green. Sponge baths are recommended.
Rest is crucial, but walking around the house is highly encouraged to promote blood circulation and prevent blood clots. Avoid heavy lifting (over 10 lbs) and strenuous exercise for 4-6 weeks.
Take prescribed pain medications exactly as directed. As discomfort improves, you may transition to over-the-counter pain relievers as advised.
Contact the office immediately if you develop: fever above 101°F, worsening abdominal pain, persistent nausea/vomiting, severe redness or drainage from incisions, or shortness of breath.
Quick answers to common procedural and administrative questions.
Yes, Dr. Green is affiliated with major Jamaican health insurance providers (including Sagicor, Medecus, Canopy, and others). Pre-authorization is typically required, and our administrative office will assist you in compiling the necessary paperwork before your scheduled surgery.
Laparoscopic or "keyhole" surgery uses small incisions (5-12mm), a camera (laparoscope), and specialized instruments. It offers benefits like less postoperative pain, smaller scars, and faster healing. Open surgery requires a larger incision to directly access the surgical site, and is chosen when laparoscopy is not medically safe or feasible.
For laparoscopic gallbladder or hernia surgery, most patients return to light desk work within 1 to 2 weeks. However, if your job involves physical labor or heavy lifting, you will need to wait 4 to 6 weeks. Dr. Green will provide a specific recommendation and medical certificate based on your healing progress.
